“Our country is in crisis that can possibly lead to economic decay.”
The IFP Youth Brigade (IFPYB) is saddened and devastated by what appears to be the unstoppable growth in unemployment and fuel prices. It is unfortunate that the government has allowed multiple fuel price hikes over the past two months, while the country is still recovering from the July unrest and looting that led to thousands of South Africans losing jobs.
The IFPYB is demanding that government take radical steps to bring about stability in the job market and boost the creation of jobs to combat this unemployment crisis. This, following Stats SA’s announcement yesterday, of a further increase in the unemployment figures. A high unemployment rate means more and more families go to bed hungry.
The IFPYB also condemns the unreasonable hike in fuel prices. This is inhumane and uncalled for; there should be other means of dealing with this situation without leaving our people to drown in poverty, especially during festive season where all families dream of enjoying proper meals together.
The combination of mass unemployment and fuel price increases will directly affect the middle-class, as well as the poorest of the poor, who might end up paying with their lives. We urge swift intervention, to prevent riots and looting that could result from widespread hunger in our communities.
The IFP has called for a Debate of National Importance in Parliament around the issue of the high and ever-increasing fuel price and is awaiting a response from the Speaker of the National Assembly.
The IFPYB trusts the Speaker will respond swiftly and favourably.
